101 THE SINGLE NON-EMERGENCY NUMBER
Merseyside Police receive more than 350,000 emergency calls a year and many of these are non emergencies: some are not relevant to the police at all.
It is hoped 101 will help to reduce the pressure on 999 calls and will help the police to provide a better service to callers.
101 is easy to remember and provides the public with a no. to report crimes that do not require emergency response.
Examples of when to use 101:
*If your car has been stolen
*If your property has been damaged or vandalised
*If you want to report a minor traffic accident
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Calls to 101 will cost 15p for the entire call, no matter how long the call or what time of day it is.
This applies to both landlines and mobile phones.
The recent cold spell has brought an increase in cars being stolen off drive-ways and outside of shops. This past week, car thieves in Maghull, Lydiate, & Aintree have been on the look-out to steal cars left unoccupied with the engine running as the owner tries to de-frost the windows or nips into a local shop.
Insurance companies are warning car owners who start their cars on frosty mornings, then go back indoors even for a moment, that they leave themselves open to the vehicle being stolen and are not subsequently covered by their insurance.
Your local Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Booth says, "We have seen a spate of 'de-frosting' thefts across the neighbourhood recently usually between the hours of 7am and 9am.This can be a double blow to the drivers who lose their cars as they may not be covered by insurance when they make a claim. Opportunist criminals are out looking for unattended cars and can be in them and gone within seconds.Car keys should be guarded like cash and other valuables at all times".
Merseyside Police advises motorists to give themselves more time on frosty mornings and to de-ice the car using a scraper rather than leaving the engine running and risk having the car stolen.
Leaving the car running unattended may also be breaking the law. A motorist was recently fined £30 for de-frosting their car outside their home because they left it unattended with the engine running. Please be warned that it is an offence to leave a car unattended with the engine running on the public highway.
Don't let criminals spoil your day.
